How To Photograph Family Groups

Our recent workshop - Photographing Real People - included a family group of four.

One of the composition rules of photography is to use odd numbers, for example 3 ducks at the local lake instead of 4, 5 windmills instead of 6. Odd numbers help to balance out composition, including people.

But when your brother asks you to take some family photos for a birthday present for Mum, his immediate family group is him, his wife and their two kids. No odd numbers there!

Included in the Photographing Real People Workshops are tools to help you to compose a nice family portrait with the difficult number of four subjects!

Each workshop also includes single and couple portraiture, communicating with your subjects and posing ideas.

Our students have a lot of fun under the instruction of Greg Perry!

All photographs by Peter Lescelle.

Due to the popularity of this workshop, we have booked another one for:
Saturday 18th October 2008
1.00pm to 4.00pm
and there are still some places available.

Also don't forget that London Photographic Studio now has one hour studio bookings with walk through, step by step, help. When you book the studio you will get one of our friendly staff members for the duration of your shoot to advise you on light placement, subject placement, camera settings and a basic understanding of how a studio works.

For bookings or more information ring us on 9528 2008.

How To Pose Your Subject

Our new workshop "Photographing Real People" - teaching photographers to pose everyday subjects - has been so popular that we are onto our third workshop in less than two months!

Photos by Sally Wittenoom.

We have a fantastic lecturer in Greg Perry who also lectures at Challenger TAFE - Greg is a wealth of information and always happy to share.

Photographing Real People explores posing family and friends - a single subject, a couple and a family group. We felt it was important to organised real couples and family groups as models for the day because we wanted people to feel comfortable with putting a hand here or an arm around there. It also proved invaluable when establishing real dialogue between the models and getting real reactions!

So a big thank you to all our models!

We ask our photographers and our models to sign a model release allowing the photographers to use the photos (for non-commercial purposes only) and which also agrees to passing on their best photos to the models. For those photographers that attended our last workshop you can email your photos to londonphotostudio@yahoo.com (one at a time high res if possible please!). Thanks!

And while our second workshop is already fully booked we still have places available for Photographing Real People on Saturday 18 October 2008 from 1.00pm til 4.00pm. You only need to bring your SLR camera and your portrait lens (50-100mm).

For more information or to book - ring 9528 2008.

Modelling Portfolios

Our Modelling Portfolios have been a huge hit in recent weeks with several girls (and a guy!) coming in for a photography session.

Each shoot can be based around a theme such as glamour, sport or lifestyle and the models get to choose photos from the shoot to use in their personal portfolios as well as a listing on our website. You can see all our models at www.londonphotostudio.com.au.

It's a new place to advertise their services, an opportunity to further build on their portfolio and experience and an opportunity for paid work with freelance and professional photographers using London Photographic Studio.

Another Busy Day!

We held two more Crash Courses in Studio Lighting last weekend - another busy day!

Photographers came from all around including the PIPsters from Flickr and members from the Mandurah Camera Club.

Lecturer Greg Perry was on hand again to help set up cameras and discuss lighting styles and then photographers got practice what they learned with one light and a reflector.

Our model for the day was Lauren - and she was a smash! Not only did she look fabulous but she got into character (no that's not her real hair!) and really helped make the learning experience an enjoyable one.

Babies, Snakes and Motorbikes!

Last week we had the opportunity to shoot a lovely couple expecting their special IVF baby!

Ken and Karen were natural models and Karen has to be the most glamourous pregnant woman I have ever seen!

Both Ken and Karen are reptile lovers, breeders and educators. So it was a natural extension of that passion that brought their beautiful pythons into their maternity shoot as well as Ken's Harley Davidson motorbike!

Karen takes her pythons Seargent and Arial out to primary schools with her business Radical Reptiles, teaching kids about our native Western Australian reptile species and Ken has a specialist pet shop dealing only in reptiles such as pythons, dragons, turtles and frogs here in Rockingham called Reptile Trader.
